SHENHUA BATTLE MUST BE WON – PEOPLE POWER IS SURGING FORWARD
Last weekend, over 600 people travelled to the majestic Liverpool Plains to join the stand against the Shenhua coal mine!
This was people power at its best – Gomeroi traditional custodians and local farmers standing alongside families, conservationists and campaigners from every corner of Australia.
As the world heads to the global climate summit in Paris, it’s ludicrous that this senseless project is even being considered back here in Australia. But we must take this stand – there is just too much at stake.
Shenhua, with persistent support from the NSW and Federal Governments, plan to unleash 10 million tonnes of coal every year. If we want a safe climate, we simply can’t dig up more coal. The mine will wipe out sacred cultural sites and some of Australia’s best koala habitat. And each pit will be dug into some of the world’s best farmland, risking the precious underground water.
Last weekend was just the latest step for this growing movement. The Gomeroi, traditional custodians of this area, and the local farmers have been fighting this project for years and now they are calling on all of us to join them.
Over the coming months we’ll be working with the Liverpool Plains Alliance to turn up the heat on the NSW Government and Shenhua as they attempt to secure the final approvals for the mine. Though our movement will never match the financial power of a Chinese-state backed company like Shenhua, we have something even more powerful — diverse and dignified people power!
By joining this movement you’ll be kept up to date with every opportunity to challenge this project in the cities and on the frontline.
Thanks for being a part of this,
